How To Set Goals

Goal setting is one key life skill that tends to get overlooked. A lot of people either can’t be bothered to do it or think that a vague goal is enough for them or think they still have loads of time anyway or… (like me) they’re scared of the future and the things that it’ll bring. Being an “in the moment” type of person can go against you sometimes, if that’s all you are. It can get you stuck. Thinking about the future is quite daunting but also exhilarating and enriching.


You should set goals whenever you

  • are overwhelmed by everything that’s going on around you
  • feel lost and unsure of where you want to be
  • have a big project or task you need to accomplish

Why is setting a goal important?

It’s simple: having a tangible aim helps you stay focused on achieving it. The presence of a goal helps you retool your brain whenever you get distracted or have to muddle a lot of tough situations. Just recalling what you want to do and why you are doing these things to achieve it does give you strength to keep pushing on.


So how does one do it?

  • Start with listing down things you enjoy doing. More than likely, you’ll be able to find something you’re passionate about in that list and see where you can go from there.
  • You don’t have to always start with The Big Goal. Little everyday goals are just as good as the big picture. Just make sure there is some cohesiveness to all your actions. Have your little goals be going in the same direction so that they’re all striving for the same cause.
  • Also think about what you don’t want or things that you hate that you’re doing but find yourself to be doing anyway. Turn those into goals. It would be just the absolute most fulfilling thing when you break a habit. Turn negative things into goals and they’ll not be as annoying or bothersome as before.


The process:

  1. Define your goal. Make sure it’s realistic and make sure it’s specific. This ensures that there is an end point and that you don’t set yourself up for failure. One example could be: Get high 70s or low 80s in Chemistry.
  2. Set subgoals. Your actions that inch your closer to your main goal is just as important as the main goal.
  3. Work out a plan of action.
