Even though the weather is not really acting like it, summer is just around the corner! The time we have all been waiting for. 3 months of vacation and free time, a period to rest and have some fun! After finishing exams and celebrating, we may find ourselves without plans or things to do. The first thing you need to do if you haven’t already is re-enrol for next semester! But then what? If you are not very sure of what to do during vacations, here are some ideas to take maximum advantage of your free time.
Don’t lay in bed for 3 months
Okay, I know we’re all tired from hard study and work, and sleeping the whole summer away sounds like a great idea. But when the break is over, you’ll look back and you’ll wish you did more than that. Think about all the plans you had when you were thinking about the summer. Going to the beach, making some BBQ with friends, going biking or swimming. Remember all of those cool plans and make them happen!
The summer is the perfect opportunity to do some volunteer work! Uni can be very time consuming sometimes, and we don’t get to do the things we want. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience that I think we should all do it at some point in out lives. It also boosts your resume and develops useful skills! There are plenty of volunteering opportunities for the break, so you’ll have plenty of options to pick from. Make sure your check out La Trobe’s volunteering webpage to find an option that suits you.
Part time work and internships
Finding a job over the summer is a great way to gain some work experience and make some money. Gaining experience while studying is very important, and will definitely help complement the skills you’re learning at uni. This will also give your career a head start and make you stand out from the competition when you’re looking for graduate work! There are plenty of options around with many companies hiring interns for the three month break. Also, retailers and restaurants are hiring Christmas casuals as things get busier during this time of the year. Take a look at La Trobe’s CareerHub to find some available positions. Also, talk to your friends and relatives to see if they know about any job openings.
If you’re staying in Melbourne for the break, make sure you enjoy the city and all of the things that it has to offer. Here are 20 free activities to do in Melbourne, so you don’t break the bank while having fun. If you’re going back home, get together with your old friends and catch up. Eat at that food place that you used to love, and spend time with your family. The important thing is that you do the things you like, enjoy yourself and come refreshed for next semester.
I wish you all the best of luck with your remaining exams. The break is very very close and one last push will get you there. Enjoy the summer, get some rest, get some experience, and you’ll be ready to kick some butts next semester!
