With so many different things going at uni, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. When you see an event on the La Trobe uni website or are told about one by your fellow students or lecturers, it is pretty hard to remember they are on. I’m one of those people that needs to put appointments in my diary other wise, they are completely forgotten about. I might take this opportunity to apologise to my dentist and hairdresser for forgetting appointments on more than one occasion.
I’ve decided to do some of the hard work for you and gather information on some of the key dates and events that are coming up over the next few weeks. Some of these are SHE specific and others, more general.
LIBRARY WORKSHOPS FOR FINDING AND REFERENCING INFORMATION
I know I’ve mentioned the importance of referencing a lot in my previous posts. However, nothing really beats getting help from someone face-to-face. These sessions will be held everyday this week (except Friday) on ALL La Trobe campuses. Click on the link below to book a session http://www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/training/program/2464
WOMEN IN SCIENCE
Women are drastically underrepresented in STEM areas. As part of Melbourne Knowledge Week, La Trobe uni is hosting a free event on the 3rd of May to discuss what more can be done to bridge the gap. It’s a great opportunity for networking and canapés! Click on this link for more information http://www.latrobe.edu.au/events/all/melbourne-knowledge-week-women-in-science
I would say that Chinese is probably one of the most useful languages to learn. With a growing Chinese economy, it is a great little extra to have on any resume!
The Confucius Institute will run Chinese Language courses on the Bundoora campus from 5:30- 7:30 pm starting on the 30th May. Click on this link for more information http://www.latrobe.edu.au/confucius-institute/learn-chinese
PAY YOUR STUDENT SERVICES AND AMENITIES FEE
What?! Another fee? Aren’t we paying enough money? Unfortunately, this is yet another expense as a uni student. The fee covers things such as
- legal services
- careers advice
- financial advice
- child care
- independent student representation
You can either pay the fee or opt to defer it as HECS. Either way, you need to get on top of this if you haven’t already because sanctions can be placed on you! You could be prevented from accessing the wifi (no, not eduroam!), the LMS and your results.
SELECT YOUR SEMESTER 2 SUBJECTS
Most of you would have selected you subjects for the entire academic year before Semester 1. However, if you have changed your mind on an elective, deferred etc, you’d best check your enrolment through StudentOnline ASAP!
EXCHANGE SUBMISSIONS CLOSING
If you read my post ‘Bon Voyage’ or went to the exchange fair earlier this month and got inspired to travel, remember that applications close on the 1st July! Don’t miss out on the once in a lifetime opportunity to go on exchange because you didn’t put a deadline in your diary! Visit this page for more information http://www.latrobe.edu.au/students/exchange/apply
GET YOUR FLU VACCINATION
2016 flu vaccinations are now available at the Bundoora Campus Medical Clinic located on the corner of Kingsbury Drive and Plenty Road. I would highly recommend getting the jab because us uni students are prone to getting sick during exam time when our immune systems are down. You can book your bulk-billed appointment online by accessing this link https://widget.appointuit.com/prac_41607/log_in
OPEN MIC ARVO BUNDOORA
Got a knack for singing and aren’t tone deaf like me? Come down to Eagle Bar @ the Union Bulding on Wednesdays from 4pm to see some great student talent. The performers will get a free drink on arrival to calm those nerves, so what have you got to lose?
BENDIGO BIKERS BREKKIE
Ditch the car for the day and ride to uni on 3rd of May! You’ll be able to skip leg day and also save on petrol. What’s more, you’ll get free food from Sweeny’s Café once you arrive on campus!
But the 3rd of May is an exception
FREE BREKKIE FOR ALL BENDIGO STUDENTS
If you don’t have a bike or are just a bit on the lazy side, you can still get your free brekkie. A week later on the 10th May, breakfast will be available to all Bendigo students on the SU floor!
Also, Wellbeing Week will be held at the Bundoora and Bendigo campuses to help students stress less. I’ll be putting a post up in the next week for more information about all the activities planned!
